Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

A device that provides emergency backup power and power conditioning to protect critical equipment from power outages and electrical disturbances.

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides backup power to critical equipment when the mains supply fails. It bridges the gap between an outage and restoration of utility power or generator activation.

UPS Topologies

  • Online (double-conversion) — highest protection, continuous DC/AC conversion
  • Line-interactive — autotransformer voltage regulation
  • Offline (standby) — simplest, switches to battery on failure

Role of Transformers

Transformers in UPS systems provide galvanic isolation, voltage matching, and bypass paths. Unitraf JSC manufactures isolation and power transformers specifically designed for UPS applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a UPS run on battery?

A typical UPS provides 5–15 minutes at full load — enough for safe shutdown or generator start. Extended runtime is achieved with additional battery cabinets.
